Activities and News Since Last Meeting
· New Meeting Location
Until further notice, meetings will be at St. Matthias Parish Hall, 409 Hemenway Street, Marlborough, MA 01752. Drive past the church and enter the parking lot on the left side of the church, drive down behind the church, and park at the rear. Use the center door under the portico. The light should be on. Thanks to Fr. Fran O’Brien for his hospitality, and our St. Matthias members, especially Mike Fallon, for arranging the space.
· Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest.
As I mentioned last month, we gave out awards after a Mass at St. Michael’s last month. Our entries were sent on to the State Council for judging on a state-wide level, and yesterday the State Council named our local winner, five year old Jayden Wheeler from Hudson, first place in the age 5-7 bracket. Congratulations Jayden.
That’s Jayden on the left. Thanks to FS Mike Wells for spearheading this initiative at St. Michaels this year. Next year we need ramp up participation in the other two parishes. This program is an excellent project for us, transmitting a positive message to our community and achieving broad public awareness of what we do. We also presented nice certificates to each participant, along with a cash gift, a hand-made wooden rosary and case and a KofC Christmas ornament for each age-group winner. Materials for The Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest are also available for older kids. The award letter from the State Council is reprinted below. Good Job, Council #81!
· Free Throw Championship
The Free Throw Championship was held on Saturday, January 22, 2022 and was a big success. Although Covid reduced our entries to just 10 participants, an excellent event was enjoyed by all. Our winning 12-year old girl sunk 13 out of 15 baskets. Since we had certificates and trophies to spare, we decided to let the little brothers and sisters, too young to compete officially, a chance to sink a few baskets and participate too.
Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to all our participants, including the little brothers and sisters. Thanks also to our Knights and volunteers who set up, judged, rebounded, and cleaned up! Special thanks to Neil Cronin who spearheaded this event. We will have some photos up on the website soon. Another good job, Council #81!
Programs and Upcoming Events
· Super Bowl Pool
The Super Bowl pool is up and running on our website. We already have 30 squares sold on the $10 pool and 21 squares sold on the $25 pool, mostly from people who played in prior years and were anxious to get on board. This is a good sign, since we sold about 25% of the squares with very little promotion, signifying this program has become popular in its own right. Usually, we don’t sell out until the day before the Super Bowl, or sometimes the day of the Super bowl, when the news and excitement heats up. I’d like to get them sold earlier! The pool can be accessed here: www.kofcmarlboro.org . We make almost $1,500 on this event every year and it costs us practically nothing, so pass this link along to your friends and neighbors. It adds excitement to watching the game – with no Patriots and no Tom Brady, it will give you a reason to pay attention.
· Upcoming Program Ideas
We are all out of programs for the year. Put your thinking caps on and give us some ideas at tonight’s meeting!
Other Meeting Agenda Items
· Prayers / Intentions:
Craig Fallon, Mike’s son, completed his full course of chemotherapy last week. He has a battery of tests at Dana Farber on the 22nd, and if everything looks good, he will have surgery on March 2nd. Keep Craig and his family in your prayers for a continuation of good results.
Phil Short is home and getting stronger every day. His biopsy and tests show he’s cancer free. Keep Phil and his family in your prayers for continued success.
· Other business?
If you have an item to add to the agenda, please let me know.
· News?
If you have any news to report, email GrandKnight@kofcmarlboro.org.
See you all Tuesday night.
Vivat Jesus.
